Description About The Zingiberaceae Family Zingiberaceae, ginger family of flowering plants, is the largest family in the Zingiberales order, with approximately 56 genera and approximately 1,300 species. Zingiberaceae or ginger family is a flowering plant family consisting of approximately 50 genera, with about 1,600 known species, consisting of aromatic perennial herbs with a clinging horizontal or tuberous rhizome distributed across tropical Africa, Asia, and Americas. The Zingiberaceae are perennial herbs, mainly with creeping horizontal or tuberous rhizomes, comprising approximately 47 genera and 1000 species. Members of this family are perennials, often having a sympodial (forked) rhizome with a fleshy root (underground stalk) such as the Pink Ginger Lily Plant.  Many species in the family are important ornamental, spice, or medicinal plants. Called a root (technically misleading, as this is a rhizome, an underground stem, rather than a root), this plant is grown worldwide today in tropical climates. It is believed that the Indians and Chinese produced ginger root for more than 5,000 years as a healing root for a variety of ailments, and this plant is now grown all across the wet tropical regions, with India being the largest producer. Common ginger is a globally-known spice or herb, known for its fragrant, pungent root.    This spectacular ginger family plant has distinctive flowers which give off a honeysuckle-like sweet aroma, and look like dancing ladies as they float through the breeze. The roots of this ginger family plant taste spicy with slight hint of lemon. The flowers of this curious ginger are quite similar to yellow ginger. There are varieties such as the Shell Ginger which becomes an excellent foliage plant.   There are 18 types of ginger plants you can grow both for decorative and cooking purposes, both in pots and gardens. Here are a few: You can choose the ones you like the most from this list of Ginger plant types, and plant them either as edible rhizomes or as exotic flowers. Officially opened in 2003, The Ginger Garden displays a vibrant living collection of some hundreds of varieties of ginger as well as plants in related families. Consisting of eight closely related plant families, the ginger order is best known for its economically significant spice crops, such as ginger, turmeric, cardamom, galanga, and torched ginger, all of which belong to the Zingiberaceae.
